Our Story

Over two centuries of dedicated service to the Bedford community

Founded in 1804

Bedford Fire Department No. 1 was established in 1804 by a group of dedicated community volunteers who recognized the critical need for organized fire protection in our growing town. What began as a small volunteer company with basic equipment has evolved into a comprehensive emergency services organization.

Throughout our history, we have adapted to meet the changing needs of our community. From horse-drawn equipment to modern fire apparatus we have continuously improved our capabilities while maintaining our core mission of protecting lives and property.

Today, we operate from one station and maintain a fleet of modern vehicles. This includes an engine, engine/rescue, tanker, ladder truck, mini pumper, brush truck and a boat. We also maintain other specialized rescue equipment, which includes water rescue, ice rescue and vehicle rescue. Our members undergo extensive training and certification to ensure we can provide the highest level of emergency services.
